Pop art is a term coined by the British art critic/curator, Lawrence Alloway in an essay titled The Arts and the Mass Media. The movement was started in the 1950’s as a way of including advertising and comic styles into mainstream art. It incorporates elements of the time’s pop culture into elements of art. One good example of this is Andy Warhol’s paintings of Campbell Soup cans. These paintings are often more mechanical looking and stringent, but not without a sense of humor, at the same time. Pop art was never intended to be an elitist form of art and was intended to be enjoyed by the masses.
Pop art is perfect for those with a sense of humor and those that like to show that sense of humor in decorating their homes and businesses. Pop art also employs bright colors and bold shapes that go well with modern styles and can add a bold pop to rooms that need a boost.
